1. Do I need a CDL?

A. If the SINGLE vehicle (no trailer) you intend on driving has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.

You will need a Class “B” CDL

B. If the truck you intend on driving (over 26,001#) is pulling a trailer that has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 # or more.

You will need a Class “A” CDL

C.  If the vehicle you are driving has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 26,001 # and you intend on pulling a trailer with a GVWR of over 10,001 # (GVWR)  The combination weight rating (GCWR) is over 26,001 #

Combined   Truck 14,000 # + Trailer 18,000 #  Total = 32,000 #

You will receive a Class “A” with two (2) restrictions

First the truck was under 26,001 # and didn’t have air brakes = “L” restriction.

Second; this is NOT a tractor / trailer.  So an NTT restriction will be placed on your license…meaning NO TRACTOR TRAILER

2. My straight truck is under 26001 #, but has air brakes, what CDL do I need?

You don’t need any CDL unless you’re going to haul Hazardous Materials and then you would need a Class “C” with Haz-Mat endorsement. Air Brakes have nothing to do with it, everything hinges on the GVWR of the vehicle.

3. I want to drive a bus and it has seating for 12 people, do I need a CDL?

NO. Only if there is capacity for 15 passengers plus the driver (a total of 16 or more) then you would need a Class “C” with passenger endorsement.

4. The bus I want to drive is 40 feet long with air brakes, do I need a CDL?

It depends on the GVWR. Over 26,001 # + 16 passengers = Class B w/ pass.

5. I need to take my driving test but I don’t have a vehicle to test with, can I rent a vehicle from you?

6.  Do I need a D.O.T. physical?

 7. I have farm plates.  Do I need a CDL?

Yes, if you are driving across state lines or more than 150 miles “air mile radius” from the farm.

8.  I have an ANTT CDL License.  I want to get my air brake endorsement.  What do I have to do?

Go to DMV and take the written test for “air brakes” and get a permit.  Then you must perform a CDL test with an air brake equipped, full class A representative vehicle (ie. tractor/trailer or a dump truck with air brakes and a trailer with or without airbrakes that has a GVWR on the driving unit of at least 26001#).

9. If I have an ANTT license, can I test with a “B” vehicle with air brakes to remove the air brake restriction?

NO.  You must test in a full representative class A vehicle with air brakes to keep your “A” license and add the air brake endorsement.

10. How Much Notice Is Required Before I Take My Test?

All CDL tests require a 3 day advance notice prior to administering the test (in order to comply with Federal Regulations). All CDL tests are $ 225.00

Should you need to rent a vehicle for testing, we have a 40’ Bus with automatic transmission, a Freightliner day cab tractor with automatic transmission and a Freightliner day cab tractor with 9 speed Road Ranger transmission. The nine speed MUST be double clutched if used for the test as is required with any non-synchronized transmission.

Tractor / Trailer or Bus rental is $ 250.00 + $ 25.00 fuel surcharge. This includes: 3 hours use of the vehicle, 1 hour to get acquainted with the vehicle and 2 hours to complete the test as required by law. Grand total $ 500.00

We pull a 28' Dry van trailer behind either tractor. For a Class “B” test, we have a bus, however; you MUST have a passenger endorsement on your permit before we can allow you to operate this vehicle.

We offer CDL testing Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Saturday [By Appointment ONLY]. Please keep in mind the 3 day advanced notice when making your appointment. Please call Steve at (970) 690-8846 to schedule evaluations or testing.
